Can I Do A Few Dental Veneers?

Are you unhappy with your smile and thinking of getting a cosmetic treatment? Porcelain veneers could be an excellent solution to give you that bright and beautiful smile. You can cover up imperfections with dental veneers and reinvent your smile. But veneers are expensive and priced by the tooth. So, looking to save money, many people ask, “are just a few veneers doable? Or do you have to get the entire set done?” We answer these and many more questions – keep reading to make an informed decision on your next dental appointment with Dr. Margaret Mitchell at Mitchell Dental Spa.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers are super thin, custom-crafted coverings made of dental-grade porcelain and are attached to the front of your tooth. This covering helps reshape your tooth and hide any flaws that ruin your smile. Dental issues that veneers can help you with include the following:

  • Discoloration
  • Gaps
  • Misalignment
  • Small teeth
  • Chipping
  • Cracking

A single treatment can resolve multiple smile imperfections. Generally, your procedure can be completed in just 2-4 sittings (assuming you do not require any other treatment before affixing your veneers). Keep in mind that it involves the removal of some of your tooth enamel which makes the procedure irreversible.

Why Should You Get Veneers?

Correctly done, porcelain veneers offer outstanding benefits. If your teeth are stained, crooked, or different in size, veneers can be your go-to choice to improve your smile. Veneers are stain-resistant, provide a natural appearance, and can last as long or longer than other dental interventions.

Understanding the Costs

When considering the cost of veneers, many factors can impact your final estimate. Generally speaking, veneers can cost around $1,000 to $3,000 per tooth. As always, you get what you pay for with higher quality restorations costing more.

Also, Dr. Mitchell may recommend other procedures to work in conjunction with veneers for best results. For example, it can be beneficial for some patients to do 3-6 months of Invisalign. While porcelain veneers can correct minor misalignments, moving some patient’s teeth into the correct position first can reduce the preparation required for veneers and get better results in the end.

Getting One or Many: What Is Right for You?

Coming back to the original question, can you get just a few veneers? The answer is: Yes! There are a few different break points that make sense when working with veneers. If your teeth are relatively straight already, dramatic results can be achieved with just the top four teeth as your canines provide a natural transition into the rest of your smile.

Getting four teeth done often gets you about 60% of the way to a theoretical ideal and, since porcelain veneers are priced by the tooth, getting four done is much cheaper than the other options. The next break point is around eight teeth. For most people that will get them to about 80-85% of that theoretical ideal. Then, if you want to go all the way, 10-12 teeth will help you achieve the absolute best results.

When considering how many veneers to get, we try to find a “sweet spot” between cost and aesthetic improvement. For some people that means four teeth. For others it means 8-12.  When you book your consultation with the Dr. Margaret Mitchell, the best cosmetic dentist in Chicago, she can help determine how many veneers you need.

Does Insurance Cover Dental Veneers?

Generally, insurance companies do not cover the initial cost of veneers as it considered a cosmetic procedure. However, the first time your veneers are cracked or damaged after they’ve been installed, most insurance companies will cover the repairs at 50%.
